Cape Sound guest house overlooks False bay, which has become a favorite calving ground for the Southern Right Whale during the late winter months and spring months. It is common to see mother and child swimming close to the shore, sometimes only a few meters from the catwalk.
Whales are no longer hunted anywhere in the Southern Ocean so in recent years the numbers of Right Whales have increased to the point that, during the calving months, daily sightings in False Bay can be almost guaranteed. Whale tour boats set off daily from Simonstown harbour and these can be reached from Cape Sound Guest house by taking the scenic 30 minute train ride from False Bay station to Simonstown.
